Official Pre-Release!

All y'all are hereby invited to my very special pre-release opening of the blog I created to facilitate the project "Perceival" that I've been ramming down your throats for a couple days.

www.perceival.blogspot.com !!!

Check it out yo!!! The final version of the first video can be found there. Don't try to spot the tweaks - it's basically the same as the one below. I really appreciate the suggestions you gave me. Very helpful! (I'll try to make the cursive text easier to read next installment - I'm DUN this one!)

I am still tweaking the text and images on the site, but I think they are about where I want them. I'd love to hear your opinion about:
the site design
if the site formats well on your computer
the content and effectiveness of the text, etc etc etc

I guess one thing that I'm self-conscious about, showing this to all of you, is that this is written in a kind of public "voice." I am aiming for understandablity and unartsiness because the site is designed for people who have never met me or seen my work (hopefully...). Therefore I think it can come off as a little self-aggrandizing, or just me making more muckitty-muck about me and my art. But I hope it won't appear that way to a new viewer - what do you think?

Anyway, thanks again for not throwing rotten tomatoes at me. I'm going to sleep for a thousand years now.

I want to know why you list it as "www.perceival.blogspot.com" and not just " perceival.blogspot.com".
I also want to know more about your idea of how the website will function, because, as I am definitely a big fan of web designs that are sloppy and confusing and made with simple html, in this case I have one problemo:

1. I don't think the design of the site goes with the style of the videos nor the concept. It seems like you want to be alienating AND inviting. This takes a good balance of clarity and confusion. As it is, I think that I would not be encouraged to watch the video and play along. To me, it doesn't feel serious, and getting people to give you something takes trust.
It could be simple, chaotic, and "unartsy" but still serious by letting the videos stand out more. I read in one of the posts that you are planning on doing that. I keep imagining a completely black website with just the video in the center. I also really like the text you used in the video, that could used throughout the page.
Getting people to give you honesty is hard, especially on the internet. I think the fact that it is an automated (like geocities or angelfire) website affects people's minds, if you could get a separate url like gwazdor.com or something, it could something something.

I want to know who you imagine will visit the website, like when you made it, who do you imagine is looking at it and how did they get there, because I am just imagining the average web surfer, and if you have someone specific you are communicating to then that would change things.
I like that you link all of your videos from youtube, it definitely keeps it from being full-on artsy.

I also feel like I might not completely understand what it is you are trying to do, and my critique is could be garbage or helpful for that reason

I made this fake website cause I was bored at work:
fake Perceival website

you might want to open this picture in a new window so it doesnt go crazy all up in this dinky window, right click the link and go to "open in new window"

I think that's really spot-on.

I finished that website at the end of a three day marvel session, so I kind of weren't thinking clearly. Plus I just realized that when you fool around with html it's going to look different on different browsers, or something...

Wait, you're not allowed to use www anymore? I thought that was like the website thing. I think it's cause I'm an old man, so I don't understand the internet the way you robokids do.

The thing is, I have very little technical ability, so the idea of building a website from scratch is pretty intimidating - I have no idea how to do it or how much money it'll cost. The one you made isn't real, right? I want that one. It looks real good. How do I get one of those?

I was very satisfied with the comments I got for the previous question-asking videos, so that part of the concept - I feel like it is fine to keep it simple - if I kind of do a minimal amount of "promotion" then it might get done.

I think it might be ok if the site were a blog because it's an easy way for me to encourage commenting. I would settle for an automated site because it's easier for me and takes less time. I think this might be a fair trade-off for the people who dismiss it because it's not pro (you have a point tho... )

Anyway, that was mega, mega helpful.

I made that design in Photoshop, but it is a very simple design for a page, and wouldn't take long. You are moving out here soon so I would gladly help you if you wanna.
You can keep the blog format easily by using WordPress, which is a template like blogger but you can customize it more and fit it to your own URL. Or if you just like blogger we could do that because you can alter the HTML and CSS of your page. Anyway, I'll see you in the hood.

Cool. Henry also said he would help me.

OK. He didn't say that. But he better!

i agree with b.f. o'brien that the design might be obscuring the purpose a little. i guess depends on whether you want just people you know to comment (in which case they'll probably make the effort to figure out what is going on) or if you want everybody in the world to comment (in which case probably things like overlapping text and stuff is too much. i mean basically if you want lots of people, you need to put the instructions right up front in the simplest imaginable way. which you've basically done but something about the design makes it so you don't even know which text to read first. it almost looks like the instructions might be background art or something. people don't like to work on the internet. it's all about making the website guide them so it feels almost like it's doing the work for them...)

on a smaller more technical note, when i open Perceival in safari the top text block lines up right, but in firefox it's a little off - the lines break "----I'll / post more" and "YOU!!! MORE / INFO:"

Hey - I'm totally in the process of ripping off that design you posted. Whoops!

If you go to the site now it is pretty different.

I am upset about the whole every site looks different on different browsers thing. It reminds me of the whole all tvs are slightly different shapes thing (by which I mean the frame proportions are a little off). That kills me. How are you supposed to "cheat?" Cheating is the most important thing and a reason to live.

Anyway - the reason the site was shite is that I did it with no sleep. I'm trying to get it to be more user-friendly, but you know, I'm a real clodhopper when it comes to web design...

Why are computers so dumb?

The page was looking good in explorer but looks lame and lopsided with other browsers.

I'm going to find the internet and punch it in the nuts.

hey farley...remember when we were just talking about how webpages are annoying....well they are...maybe you should stop thinking about the webpage and just go "how bout a nice hot dog and a beer"...and then release it unto the world...the website doesnt need to be slick...or does it?

Eff Gwazdor said...

I want cotton candy!

Don't worry about it being too slick. Don't worry about that!
