major mind grapes

well there hasnt been too much activity here for a while...which is too bad, but also...we dont really all create work as much as we want to...and at first i think there was a lot of efort to find something or make something to post, which i thought was a great idea, because it motivated people to work...but obviously i aint that simple...so i have been listening to a lot of music..like music where the song and the lyrics come together and make something that most other media cant create...and i think music is the most successful media, in terms of having a point and making it in the shortest time possible, which is something i want to do with my animations, but as they lack any sort of words or narration, or even plot, i am finding this shit difficult...at first i was listening to a lot of intrumental music, which i think is a good starting point for me, because music with lyrics is something completely different...so i basically want to put the question out there: is there any sort of correlation between intrumental music and purely visual video, and what is that connection and how do i make it work? are there any songs/artist in particular where you seem to get a visual representation of the music in your head...like when you are reading a book you form mental images...does this happen to you when you listen to music, and specifically instrumental music, and how/why/what? like would a verse/chorus/verse organization be stupid in an animation? the other thing is that i am writing a score for an animation right now....because i got so interested in music going with animation i am starting with the score and then collaging all these flash elements that i never finished into something you can watch like a movie....so i was wondering what people thought of the score so far...it is far from finished....also....when you listen to the score, do you see things happening? what are they? anyway....here is the score...i figure most people here are inter-smart enough to be able to use the "save linked thing" option on whatever browser you use to get this downloaded instead of loaded in the browser:

People Just Ain't No God

also...although i havent done it yet i want to encourage people to participate in farley's "perceival" project....you know what it is cuz he posted about it like 9 billion times...but this is for real and if i am about to sit around for two hours for his videos to load so that i can help his project, which is due to be in an exhibition, then you can spend a few minutes yrself...the videos are actually awesome and this is a community, so "bring it on all or nothing" (thats a movie title, not a ummmm motto) here is the link for those who didnt get it, maybe one of the problems is that he used "ei" and i always get it confused is "ie" cuz i think i didnt pay enough attention in 3rd grade:

DO IT

I like how you're thinking of video structure in musical form. If you're going to look through the verse/chorus/verse lens though, you need to have that eternal battle with development vs. repetition. The first thing that comes to my mind is Jeff Lewis's video for "posters"

www.fortmarkfilms.com

Jeff has a really good handle on developing lyrics and music in that (musicial) form, and I think it holds over well into video.

Thanks for the shout HenrEEE.

Of course I do nothing BUT think about putting sound and animation together recently... I'm working on these Perceival animations all the time. Except from around 5 to 11 when I am asleep.

I think what you are saying is a little vague - as it always is when talking about the idea for a project. What I'd really like to see of course is the work you've been talking about.

What I think is interesting is how work may be produced for one reason, but it ends up getting used for another reason. In this way one could say artists "appropriate" their own work. (Hot-button word warning!) But really - sometimes things get used for a completely different reason, a different meaning than you intended. This tends to enrich the work.

In terms of posting - all I could post about right now is "Perceival." It might get a little boring for the people here on the EPN. But I am desperately seeking people to comment.

I am always looking for someone to tell me how to interest people in the project. But at this point I would like to keep the videos part of the same series - all similar somehow.

I sometimes get frustrated and angry because this project confuses art and self-promotion. I am not that interested in (or good at) self-promotion, and it makes me feel yucky. I sometimes feel rejected when my friends don't get back to me or participate in the project, and I also feel like I'm exploiting them. But I really am interested in people's reactions and interpretations...

Anyway, this is my last project I am going to attempt to get a reaction from the general public. It is just too tiring... I would like to do something more hands-on, less wordy, more sensorial.

But I want to do a few more of these videos too.

Hey - I hope I see you between Maine and Pennsyltucky.

Cheerio.
