Hey eveyone. So, I've been getting really frustrated with this video idea I've been working with. Here's the movie. (it's big, let it load first)
The audio track was put together with a piano and guitar and some other shit laying around my apartment, and being the hypocrite that I am, it includes some primitve digitally generated synth sounds (for the low-end rumbling mostly, with an additional FM synth to fill up some of the freq.)
I want brutal criticality here.. Maybe it's done, maybe not.. but does it interest you guys? I've been looking at it for too long.

One thing I've decided is that the composition should be centered -- that might make it more hypnotic. Also, the circular astro-star chart .. there should be more stuff like that the whole time.
yeah - i watched this and didn't know what to say. i felt your confusion/frustration. i don't dislike the piece - but i just don't know what to make of it.
the astro/chart thing does seem really out of place - so yeah, either nix it or add more of it. centering the composition would make it seem more like a hindu religious portrait or something...and i think that's sort of what you're going for? so that's good...
the piece also seems maybe too short? i'm not sure what your intention with it is. i mean, it seems almost like a station-id or one of those production company id's you see before movies - but it's a little too long for something like that. it's a puzzling thing, tho...
It seems like a sketch to me - an idea for the "look" of a finished work, rather than the concept for a project... We tend to be pretty talky on EPN these days - I know Henry wishes there were more "art" up here - by which he means images. So this is good.
As for the "look" - I like the general idea - creating a multi-armed goddess or something based on any number of Eastern religions. I like the movement, I like the music. The effect on the screen (the horiz lines) - is that intentional? It seems wrong. The framing is a problem - the centering. The setting is unresolved.
But what could be exciting about this video is that it could function as a way of looking more systematically at the movements and meanings in this kind of dance or figure study. You don't need to become an authority on Buddhist or Hindu religious iconography, but it would be an interesting thing to explore using non-linear editing. After all, there are so many meanings to investigate - who is this woman suppose to represent? How about the history of different hand positions that have very specific ceremonial/symbolic meanings withing these traditions? Personally, I am interested in how abstract form (i.e. finger/hand position) comes to have meaning, and this would be how I would treat the project.
Total Cool Dude: Station ID is an interesting connection. India said something similar, which is that it feels like meditation in Pill Form.
I want to push it more in the direction of trance inducing -- so I think that there needs to be more light pulsing at certain frequencies (any suggestions?). The figure then becomes like the stopwatch for the hypnotist: something to focus on while you're led deeper into a meditative state.
For that it should be way longer..
EFF:
Completely a sketch for sure. Still trying to figure this one out.
Exploring the gestures is a great idea. The line screen filter was supposed to make you think more about the medium -- light, and how it powers the computers and Tvs that we worship. I agree though, it looks too much like a mistake and I want to come up with a better way of demonstrating that concept.
Maybe we need a good Light Art thread. Where's Hap Tivey?
So, there's this other element which is how to go to the park and make art at the same time.
