sonic resistance anonymous

I’ve been thinking about anonymous music recently. That is music without precise authorship, personality, or specific (myspace) profile. In many cases this is a tactic to create mystery vis-a-vis sudden interest in a project. Yet in others (of interest here) it enables music to speak for itself. After hearing (and greatly appreciating) TCD’s recent posts I’ve meant to post something from BLANK DOGS:

No one knows who this guy (or persons) is. While they pledge allegiance to Madagascar, certain trails have them pinned down to the Brooklyn area. Granted, the surrounding mystery has created hype and an influx of small press eps on various vinyl pairings (three 7”s + two 12” eps since last summer). I'm wondering to what degree musical anonymity is (could be) subversive? It certainly challenges the prescribed band structure where musicians are the face (that is the age, sex, and race) of their music. The Residents of course come to mind, as does a smorgasbord of bands who were (in their time) maybe too controversial or anti-social to walk down the street without risking attack from one offended party or another, if not for their clever -- albeit often thinly veiled disguises + aliases (Mentors’ El Duce, or Dwarves’ HeWhoCanNotBeName) ...
