ok...i was working on this today....its an image, but its the basis for what is going to be an animation....all of my work is animation destined for video. so basically i am interested in collaged images...like a collage that is edited with the computer to make it more cohesive...but i am still interesting in making the images look like computer animation...i like the way using actual images enriches the picture...but i am still interested in flat computer color and contrast between computer art and image...i like the way things look bizarre and out of place..i want to create realistic images out of unrealistic elements....basically try to imagine this image in the context of a movie on a tv with action in front of it...i want my images to be very cinematic...where am i going here? whats good and whats bad? what should i develop and what should i abandon? so this is the first post...lets be creative with our responses...i think that it is more than ok to stray away from the actual image and just kind of write what you feel...like some bull crap you were thinking of a week ago and comes to mind...or some shit you are working on and you think will develop this or how this relates to what you are working on...i think the discussion should be really open to anything....uh...ok.

ok....looks like it works...although the server is a little slow...although people with high-speed (aka everybody but me) will have no problem. and its really easy to do...so get busy posting and shit.
Hey. I have been blogging like crazy and I'm all pooped out.
In terms of the site - I think it's a great idea, and I'll make a mad link here. I wish that we could see the image while we comment (mine just says [Photo] - but you can't click on it...) - can that be arranged?
I don't know what image to put up right now. I think I'll wait til tomorrow - don't feel so fresca now.
Hold on...
So, where are you going with this image? I kind of feel like maybe your best skills are in landscape. For example, I don't like the one with the weird snowman who comes marching through as much as jsut the mountains. As soon as a character appears you just start thinking about things with a different portion of your monkeybrain. Landscapes are inherently more thoughtful, more meditative. While characters are more social, more cultural. Not that landscape isn't cultural. Oh man, talking, you must know about Komar and Melamid, right? If no, we gotta talk. I mean, I'm md not saying that your characters are bad - but I feel like... Well, with me, senior year I did this project and, man, it was like all the hell all over the place - drawing, sculpture, video, and every idea from everywhere. And then I went to Osaka and I spent the whole time like doing one thing, which for me was to do drawings in the notebooks I used while I was supposed to be teaching, and not using any writing, and that was really reductionist for me, but I think it really made it possible for me to figure out what I wanted to do, and it paid off cause now I'm living with Mom and Dad and I have a beard and smell kind of bad, so I got into Berkeley. I mean, people dis reductionism, but, like, think about science - people had to figure out that there were atoms, then elementary particles, then quarks, then strings before they figured out that the universe has 10 dimensions and started thinking holistically about the role of consciousness in quantum mechanics. Holism and Reductionism work hand in hand.
Anyway, maybe landscapes and dreamscapes would be - there are so many elements in there to work with - like weather, like plant life, like continental drift, like the food chain. So by reducing the possible elements you increase the operational function of each element.
Talking about food chain - I wish those pears were ripe but they aren't.
And that's pretty much exactly what I think.
oh....uh...i didnt really understand that....but i know how you feel about characters ruining an image...like i feel like i put so much work into the image behind the character because for some reason i am much interesting in that....but then its the character that attacts the most attention obviously...and the problem with my situation is that the characters in the scene are most likely going much much less developed than the scenes behind them...and i want to play that to my advantage....like say this image had a bunch of things animated in it...like hte background was much more complex than the chracter in the forground....would that ever work? because thats what i am really interested in...i mean i want to create really lush images...and basically i need to cater to my technical abilities...but can i develop a great image using these contrainsts...i want to create a unique image...something that shows a budget and limitation in certain aspects...while still showing a crapload of dedication and thought to the things i felt i could accomplish...
and i know what you say about reduction...but also i really want to make a complex image...because what is going to go in front of it is going to be much less complex...i mean..i feel i am in a constant state of confusion so that is something i want in my images...but like a coherent confusion...like if you just look at the image you can make sense of it...but a closer inspection confuses your original assumption
Hey Henry and Farley, this is Paul. I'm just gunna make a real quick comment cause I hafta go to work.
Henry, did you ever look into d&d? I mentioned it to you initially because I thought you'd generally be into it, but now that I've looked at your work again I think it would really give you some good ideas. D&D Is all about developing characters and landscapes from scratch. It has that sword and sorcery aesthetic, but thats just a starting point.
Anywho, this blog is a good idea.
Shit, I forgot....
I hate when people tell me to look at something or check something out.
...Sorry Henry
Paul - That's what I'm NOT into about D&D is the character/adventure aspect of it. But I fully understand why people get into it.
H - what do you mean "I didn't really understand that" ??????? It seems like you got most of what I was saying...
Paul - What are you talking about - you don't like when people say "check this out" ?????????????????
That's basically all the internet is, is a huge collection of "check this outs.' I think this site should have more of that.
Paul - i just re-read my post. It sounds really bitchy, but I didn't mean it like that. woops.
I just natrally take a combative stance cause it's the internet, and, you know, it's more fun to read a debate than an agreement contest.
Anyway, I'd like to hear more about the use of landscape in d&d an shit like that.
paul - thanx for tha tips....i havent really gotten into d and d yet...but i think you make a good point...also from what i know about d and d there is a lot fo chance involved...so like john cages chance compositions you could make a work of art based on the chance and strategy and process or something...it seems to me that this is what is at the heart of d and d...but then i dont play it...but i would like to see a work of art based on d and d that is not like a hot babe and a dragon or something, but something abstract...based on the form of the game.
paul...i hate to say this...but i think we should have a lot of "check this outs" on this page...i mean there can never be too much information i think...also on the internet is pretty easy just to click a link...especially for all you lucky bastards with high speed....and i guess i just like information and data and stuff....
thanks for posting man! i would be really excited if you put an image or something up when you have something you want some input on....ok cool
I didn't mean we shouldn't show eachother stuff, I just mean that sometimes it can be a cheap response to work to simply suggest the artist look at something. It's a natural response I suppose. Don't get me wrong, I love awesome shit. The more sweet stuff the better. I looked at both you guy's websites/youtube thingies.
Henry- I see what you mean about concentrating on backgrounds vs. the characters. I like the animations where the background stands alone for a while, or there is little enough movement in the character that the background stands out just as much. I think the figure/background works really well in the doom blossom. The pacing is slow enough to appreciate the entire image rather that focussing entirtely on the flower. I like the idea of really slow moving animations.
Farley- Did you chop and or screw that Chinese duck song? It sounds awesome, I had to listen to it thrice.
i see what you mean about "check this out"....it can be a real cop-out....
i like what you said about slow moving, or minimally moving animations...i mean most of my animations move slow because flash isnt really designed to handle as much as i try to make it handle...but i end up liking the way it looks...i think because i spend so much time on the background/landscape i want people to appreciate the whole image...i mean for me it is going to have to be like that...because i cant really make a complex enough character to effectively grab a viewers attention.
i think what you said about a slow/little moving character is a good idea...initially i was thinking the opposite...that the only way for me to create an attention grabbing character would be to make it psycho...but now i think that the character should not grab attention, but instead blend in to the image....
oh..and paul...if you have a webpage you want to be in the links section...send me an email about it...that section is meant for all members
So um, not to... do what we're *specifically talking about not doing*, but check this out.
It reminds me a bit of what you are doing, and also! If you are looking for ways to create engaging characters - well, nothing makes a character more engaging than having to interact with it! And having to search a landscape for a thing to click to make a thing happen really makes you look more closely at the landscape too. Um anyway this may or may not be useful to you, but like the man says... check it out!
interesting anmation...but not quite bizarre enough..but still..the execution was very nice...and this is something to be admired.
Paul - I chopped it, but I didn't really screw it.
Fuck, all of this landscape discussion just reminded me i haven't mailed you that lord of the rings game I got you henry. Shit, I'm such a retard sometimes.
dont sweat it man...i still have to get windows on this computer...speaking of which...does anyone have a copy of windows? probably xp...with the service pack 2...i need to install that shit on my mac.
